Exploring VENICE (and its problems)

It’s not only about romance and singing gondoliers – this city faces more problems than others

.

It was partly rainy, but still sunny when I visited the city on water. While arriving by a boat, we enjoyed all the colors emerging in front of us. It was exciting – we’re visiting THAT FAMOUS Venice!

.

Our joy didn’t last long. Yes, we were exploring that famous city – at the same time as THOUSANDS of other tourists.  Our boat, which went ashore onto a cranky wooden dock was one of many that day. And as the day progressed, it was impossible to make a photo without anybody on it.

Amongst other problems Venice is facing, besides floods, housing for locals is a big deal. Gaining a nice flat for them is nowadays very hard – it’s us – tourists  willing to pay more for acommodation who raised prices to highest heights.

I had only one day to explore Venice, so I’m no expert in this area whatsoever, but still – I felt overwhelmed, especially in the most famous places in town. However, as soon as I wandered around tiny streets farther from the center, I grasped at least a little bit of genuine atmosphere of the city.

Walking through stone streets, numerous bridges and small balconies, I was wondering, with all admiration and respect, about city’s untouched existence, despite everything.

Watching over the whole city from Ponte di Rialto, I definitelly had mixed feelings – It’s amazing and amazingly tiring place. Let’s hope it survives. Everything.
