BRATISLAVA all year round – a local’s guide

It’s not as boring as you might think

.

I’ve been living in Bratislava, Slovakia for three years now, so I (for the most time) feel like a local. Depending on the season you’ll visit my town, I divided pretty sightseeings, places to eat and drink and events to go to, which I love.
.

SPRING

.

Medická záhrada

.

There are few gardens and parks in the city, but Medická záhrada is the most beautiful in spring. Grab your camera and take beautiful pictures with blossoming magnolias and tulips.

.

City days

.

Usually on the last week of april, there are several events held in honor to the City of Bratislava – there are some concerts, events in the city and many museums are free of charge in those days. For more information, search for “bratislavske mestske dni”.

.

Majáles

.

In the past, event called majáles was something as a celebration of spring and now it returned in the modern way. In Bratislava, it is usually happening on the first weekend in May and there are many concerts and beautiful firework on the river Danube.

SUMMER

.

Zlaté piesky

.

Slovakia isn’t a marine nation, but at least we have several pretty lakes to chill at. My favorite within the city is Zlaté piesky. If you’re willing to travel outside a bit, I advise you to visit also Senec lakes appr. 20 minutes train ride, which are even more beautiful.

Magio beach

.

Every summer, tons of sand are brought on Danube riverside along with few bars, food stalls, stages etc. There are plenty things to do there – sports, events, you should check it out yourself here.

.

Park of Janko Kráľ

.

Not far from Magio beach – when it’s hot, this park (which is the biggest in the city, but not the most beautiful in my opinion) will cool some heat of summer days.

.

Eurovea riverside

.

Eurovea is a shopping mall, but it also has an unique exterior – you can sit on the grass and watch the river flow. I personally love its atmosphere. There are also sometimes events in front of the mall like concerts or travel movies.

.

Events

.

In summer, there are events probably every day in the town. For more info, clink here.

AUTUMN

.

Biela noc

.

At the end of September or at the beginning of October, there is an event in the city occurring solemnly at night – it’s called white night and its full of light art exhibits, performances and videomappings. More info here.

WINTER

.

Christmas market

.

The atmosphere of Bratislava Christmas markets is amazing – they’re not big, but cozy. I wrote more about the the market here.

View from Old City Hall

.

When we’re already talking about Christmas market, the view  from Old city hall tower is the best.

.

.

Christmas tram

.

If you see a tram decorated like this, don’t hesitate to hop on – it’s free, it’s pretty and it’s warm inside 🙂

New Year’s Eve

.

On the New Year’s Eve, there is a big firework on the river Danube. The best observing point if probably from SNP “UFO” Bridge. Then, music is playing for few hours and you can dance outside to celebrate.

.

Kamzík

.

This is a hill above the city where you can ski or slide or just have fun.  Several food stalls as well as an unique rotating restaurant high in the tower with a pretty view are also nearby.

.

All YEAR-ROUND places to see:

.

The Bratislava Castle

.

The castle itself isn’t the most beautiful that I’ve already seen, but it has a nice garden and beautiful views. In summer, young people sit on the castle walls and watch the sunset with pretty view. In winter, there is also another Christmas market held there with nice atmosphere.

.

UFO

.

Ufo is Bratislava’s most curious place. I mean, where have you lately seen an ufo-shaped restaurant on the top of a bridge? It also has a pretty viewpoint (probably the most beautiful view of the city). And you can get there with discount if there momentarily is one on this site.

Blue church and Šafárikovo námestie

.

Bratislava has probably the most beautiful blue church – it looks like if it was made from candy 🙂 I advise you to walk a little bit in the area, as you’ll find several  beautiful old houses. You should also visit Šafárikovo námestie, a small, but pretty park.

Street art in the city center

.

When walking around Kamenné námestie, you will see several street art workpieces that I personally love.

.

Čumil and Ignac Lamar’s statues

.

You haven’t visited Bratislava if you don’t have a photo of čumil (which is peeking from canal) or statue of guy with his hat.

.

.

Sandberg

.

Even though it is not allowed to climb it anymore, Sandberg is still a great place with interesting atmosphere. It is now a remain of prehistoric sea that once was there.

.

Slovak national gallery

.

Slovak national gallery is free of charge all the time and some of its exhibits are really interesting (and even interactive!)

.

Rocket fountain

.

It’s just a fountain (which, I admit, may not sound that interesting to you, but I like it – and it’s also steaming! 😁)

.

.

Presidential palace and the fountain of peace

.

Yeah, that’s where our president works (allegedly). You can also check its garden, which is not as beautiful as the one on the castle, but it’s good for a little rest.

.

To eat and drink, I prefer:

.

Street food park

.

Which is unfortunately held only once or twice a month and is full of amazing and interesting food from all over the world. Check when the nearest food park is on their facebook page.

.

Don Quijote – the best pizza in the town

.

And the spiciest! This isn’t the biggest place, so you should better do a reservation when planning to eat there on Friday or Saturday evening.

.

Škodovka

.

I don’t visit this place regularly, but it is a pretty showcase of our life in the past – typical furniture and food – i recommend you to try “treska v rožku”, which is a fish mayonnaise salad with pastry. It’s food that we all have grown up with 🙂

.

Urban House

.

This is my favorite place in the city center, its service is always very nice. They also have a food menu and amazing variety of drinks.

.

Výčap u Ernoho

.

In this place, you can choose from several unique crafted beers and even take them outside to hang out with friends.

.

Huh, that was a loooong article. However, I hope you’re more excited now to visit my town and enjoy it. If you have any questions, just contact me and I will help 🙂
